Throughout history, women seeking new hairstyles have found inspiration
in the tresses worn by people described as royal. From Ancient Egypt to
modern Britain, hairstyles worn by queens and princesses have appeared
in the general population. Whether short or long, straight or curly,
royalty hairstyles continue to influence modern women.

Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, lived more than 2,000 years ago,
yet her royal hairstyle lives on in modern times. Upon Cleopatra's death
on August 12, 30 BC, the Roman emperor Octavius ordered all her images
destroyed. Nevertheless, surviving coins and statues with her image
escaped destruction, and are displayed in the British Museum and the
Egyptian Museum. Those images show two distinct styles.
.
On coins, Cleopatra's hair is pulled back into a bun, following the
Greek fashion and her Ptolemaic Greek origins. In statues, she is shown
with a shoulder-length blunt cut most closely associated with her. Her
blunt-cut tresses reflected Cleopatra's devotion to Egypt. The Cleopatra
hairstyle adapted for modern use is shoulder length, or slightly
longer, with wide bangs cut straight across. Elizabeth Taylor wore her
hair this way for the film, "Cleopatra."
