Hair
braiding is an integral part of hairstyles and fashion for all races of
women. African American women use braids to style hair, to weave in
hair extensions and to keep hair in place. Cornrow braids are simple
braids done directly on the scalp or used in conjunction with other
styles. By learning how to do cornrow braiding, adding extensions or
doing variations of the simple cornrow braid, hairstylists will gain
another styling skill.

Braiding Cornrows
-
1
Draw the hairstyle or plan the style on a Styrofoam head.
Having an end-goal in mind of what the braids should look like will keep
the style work organized and prevent you from having to start over.
-
2
Wet hair. Hair should be damp to the touch but not soaking
wet. Mist the head with spray bottle and continue to mist each section
of hair as you braid.
-
3
Part the hair with a comb or pick. Using the style planned, start with the crown of the head and work your way back.
-
4
Pick up a small section of hair and separate it into three
parts. Keep the hair sections small. Use a detangler for fine or curly
hair. Take a hair clip and move hair not in the section out of the way.
-
5
Start braiding. Take the right section and cross it over the
middle section. Hold both the right and middle sections with the right
hand. Take the left section and pass it over the now middle section.
Repeat twice.
-
6
Continue braiding. Add a small section of hair to each of
the outer strands and continue the braid all the way down the section.
Keep adding even amounts of hair as you braid your way down.
-
7
Secure the hair with a hair band or clip. Part the next
section of hair and repeat the process. When finished with the braids,
spray them with hair gel or moisturizer to prevent breakage.
