Signs You Are Having Hair Loss

With over 100,000 hairs on the average woman's head, it may seem odd to think a woman would notice any signs of hair loss unless it is significant, since everyone typically loses at least 100 hairs from their head each day.

Types

  • The five basic hair loss types are telogen effluvian (thinning hair due to sudden hair cycle changes), alopecia areata (losing hair in large patches, usually medically related), androgenic alopecia (loss due to genetics), involutional alopecia (normal thinning of hair due to aging) and trichotillomania (loss due to tearing out one's own hair).

    General Signs

    • Some general signs of hair loss in women include seeing more hair than normal appear in your hair brush or on your sink or vanity when brushing your hair; the realization that you seem to be having to lift off more hair from the shoulders of your blouse tops and jackets than you did before; or experiencing drain problems in your home because of hair clogging up the shower or tub.
In addition, another general sign of hair loss is the receding hairline along the side of the face or forehead, which seems to appear overnight, but actually has been slowly moving backwards over a much longer period of time.

    Concerning Signs

    • It's one thing to notice a few extra hairs in your hairbrush; it's another to feel a sudden bald patch beneath that head of hair or to suddenly have your hair come out in clumps.
Patchy hair loss might not actually be noticeable to others initially, but it is keenly noticed by the woman suffering from it and may represent the beginnings of a serious illness. Likewise, having quarter-sized hair loss spots on the head, interspersed among normal hair growth, can indicate health concerns, too. But the most concerning hair loss observed in women is the one that consumes the whole head: total baldness.

    Telogen Effluvium

    • When your hair comes out in clumps as you brush it or wash it, it's a loss you notice right away and is medically called Telogen effluvium. But don't panic. This type of loss is usually due to a stressor you have experienced lately and will typically stop when your stressor is removed or becomes less pressing to you emotionally. The stressor could have been a surgery, a drastic change in diet, nutritional deficiencies or even the loss of a loved one.

    Alopecia Areata

    • This type of hair loss is generally genetic in nature, but the exact cause has not been determined medically; however, it is believed that due to some recent type of autoimmune disease presence, alopecia areata is triggered into action. The good news is that although it may occur off and on during your life; it isn't permanent. Additionally, you don't lose all your hair with this condition; you just lose small quarter-sized patches of it, which can actually even disappear from your eyebrows and other body parts.

    Androgenic Alopecia

    • Heredity is the result of this type of hair loss and, unfortunately, it is permanent. However, it is rare for a woman to experience total baldness from it. Generally, thinning of the hair in certain areas (the sides, the front, or the crown) is the result experienced instead.

Stopping Hair Loss in Young Women

Instructions

    • 1 Before you start on a cure, you have to diagnose the problem. Hair loss in young women comes from a number of sources, including mental stress, hormone disorder, or as a side effect from other drugs. Take stock of what's going on in your life. Are you stressed, or did you just start taking a prescription medication? You can also experience changes during puberty. This is natural, and your doctor should know what to do. All these conditions are completely treatable, so if your doctor can't explain exactly what is going on with your hair loss, find a new one.
    • 2
After you locate the cause, it's time to start with basic cures. Before you delve into perscriptions, you must determine if the cause for the hair loss is stress. As a young woman, school and life in general is quite stressful. The second step to stop hair loss in young women is to take a breather and tone down the stress in your life, because stress also serves as a catalyst to inborn conditions which might cause hair loss in young women.
    • 3
After you destress, now is the time to consider other treatments. Rogaine works wonders for some young women trying to stop hair loss, and Provillus has also been shown to work. Consult your doctor first.
    • 4
If medications don't work, you also have electric combs you can try, which don't actually stop hair loss in young women, but will cosmetically cover the thinning portions of your hair until your doctor can figure out the next step. You can also try hair transplants which will cover any spots. Neither of these things will actually stop hair loss in young women, but will save the embarrassment of public knowledge. I know it's hard. Lean on your doctor, and trust. Something will work to stop your hair loss; it just takes time. Good luck!

Shampoos & Conditioners...Hair Loss Prevention

Baldness--or, excessive hair loss--is a condition that affects many people from all walks of life. Excessive hair loss can be hereditary, but it also may result from a medical condition or reaction to a medical treatment. In any event, you should contact your doctor about the cause. Your doctor's advice or prescription may lead you to the use of a hair loss prevention shampoo and conditioner.

Hair Rinse & Hair Color...Effects

Hair rinse and hair color are generally displayed much too close on salons, store shelves, in the market etc--yet their uses are very different. While hair rinse is a non-damaging, temporary change, hair color is longer-lasting.

Effects : Hair rinse will help you achieve a different hair color temporarily. It's great for an event or to test out how a certain shade may look with your skin tone. Hair color is considered a permanent change because it contains ammonia and other chemicals that change the hair's color for an extended period. To make a big change, hair color is better than hair rinse.

Considerations : Permanent hair dyes have a tendency to change the natural pigment of hair. If used often, hair dyes can cause hair to become coarse or damaged.

Misconceptions : Not all hair color is permanent. There are semi-permanents, temporary dyes, demi-permanent and natural dyes. Occasional coloring will not ruin hair. As with everything, use moderation.

Hair Rinse & Hair Color...Differences

Hair rinse and hair color are generally displayed much too close on salons, store shelves, in the market etc--yet their uses are very different. While hair rinse is a non-damaging, temporary change, hair color is longer-lasting.

Hair Rinse

  • Hair rinse is a great choice for those who want to change their hair color temporarily. If you want to lighten your hair, a rinse may not be for you. It will take several rinses to achieve a lighter color. Rinses generally last for about seven washes.

Hair Color

  • Hair color can be more damaging for your hair and will last longer than a rinse--generally from two to eight weeks depending on the color and the amount of times you wash your hair.

Color-Rinse Black Hair..

Using a color rinse is an easy way to change your appearance without the drama of the effects being permanent. Rinses only coat the outside of the hair shaft so your normal color should return after six to eight washes. However, there are a limited number of options for people with black hair who want to rinse it. Because the hair is so dark, a rinse is too weak to lighten the hair. But reds, purples, and blues will work and add depth to your dark natural color.

Instructions

    • 1
Rinse your hair under warm water until it is fully saturated.
    • 2
Put on the plastic gloves provided with the hair rinse and mix the color according to the instructions provided.
    • 3
Put a towel over your shoulders to protect your clothes. Comb through your hair to get rid of any tangles.
    • 4
Use the applicator tip of the color rinse bottle to divide your hair into quarter-inch partings, using the hair clips to help keep the separated parts of hair in place. Squeeze the bottle and work the mixture through the hair, being careful not to drip any dye onto anything, as it will stain. At each section, distribute the dye into the root and rub it in. Rub the remainder through the length of your hair until all of it is completely saturated.
    • 5
Use the hand-held mirror to check the back of your head in case you have missed any spots. Pull your hair back away from your face but don't clip up so the color has a chance to breathe. Leave the rinse on for the time allocated in the directions.
    • 6
Shower and wash out the rinse, following the directions on shampooing and conditioning afterward. Blow dry and style as normal.

African Hair-Braiding Styles...(conts)

Braiding Into Other Hairstyles

  • Apart from being a stylish choice within themselves, braids can be used to achieve other hairstyles. A natural way to do dreadlocks is through braiding. Once braids are set, the process of simply twisting or using a latch hook on the braids, combined with moderate washing of the hair will eventually, sometimes after a year or more, lead to braids. Many people espouse this method, arguing that locks take the best shape using braids. Another use of braids is for extensions. Synthetic or real hair is braided into your natural hair. Setting extensions this way is far more permanent than clip-on extensions and, many argue, more durable.

Preparation for and Management of Braids

  • Before braiding your hair, there are many things to consider. First, hair must be in tip-top shape before braiding, as after the process it is difficult to care for your hair. Have a hot oil or deep conditioning treatment done to lock moisture into your hair, easing the braiding process. Get a haircut, shedding all split ends. If you are braiding extensions into your hair, use the highest quality products; lower quality products tend to break and damage hair. Choose a hairstylist who is experienced with the type of braiding you need. Each style of braiding requires a specific technique and, when done wrong, can cause discomfort, hair damage or a sloppy look. Ensure hair is as clean as possible and dry before braiding. After braiding, use dandruff or braiding shampoo. Braids have a special effect on the scalp, so massage oil onto the scalp frequently. Stay away from heat styling and ponytails as much as possible as both can weaken braids and pull hair out from the roots. Finally, when the time comes, do not attempt to remove the braids yourself; the process of unbraiding can be as involved as the process of braiding itself.

African Hair-Braiding Styles

Braids are an age-old tradition in African culture. They have been used to signify social, economic and marital status throughout history. In modern times, they have taken on a new life, serving as a way for African-Americans to connect to their heritage or as an efficient, practical way to keep hair.

Popular Braids

  • The two most popular braid styles for African-Americans are the Country Plait and its variation, cornrows. Both of these styles are attained by sectioning the hair and braiding it very close to the scalp in rows. The Plait weaves in hair from above the braid, whereas cornrows weave hair in from below. This creates a more three-dimensional look for cornrows and flatter braids with the Plait. Both braiding techniques can be used to create rather unique and complex designs with the hair. Micro Braids have recently become popular and can allow for many different hairstyles to be worn day to day. These braids are extremely small and appear like thick strands of hair.

How to Volumize Dry Hair

Many women desire a full, thick head of hair. Unfortunately, not all women have naturally voluptuous hair. Luckily, everyone can achieve the look, using hot rollers to volumize their dry hair.

Instructions

    • 1
Heat the hot rollers. They need to reach their maximum temperature before using them.
    • 2
Section off hair into four parts. Hold back each section with clips.
    • 3
Begin rolling hair. Start with the top of the head. Unclip the top section of hair and comb out a portion in the front. Take a small portion, no larger than the width of the roller. Spray a small amount of styling spray at the base of the hair. Start the roller at the ends of the hair and wrap the hair around the roller, rolling towards the back of the head. Complete each section the same way until all the hair is rolled.
    • 4
Let the rollers cool down. Allow the rollers and hair to completely cool before removing them.
    • 5
Remove rollers slowly, starting from the back. Work towards the front of the head.
    • 6
Style hair. Tousle with your fingers or brush it out gently. The more the hair is touched and maneuvered, the more volume will be lost.
    • 7
Finish with a final mist of styling spray. Avoid using too much product, it will weigh the hair down and cause it to flatten out.

How to Curl Dry Hair

When thinking of using rollers to curl hair, the old fashioned way of curling hair while wet comes to mind. Most people think the only way to curl dry hair is with a curling iron, but that has changed. Using hot rollers you can curl dry hair in less than 20 minutes and have curls that bounce until the very end of the night.

Instructions

1.
    • 1
Plug in your hot rollers so they begin to heat up. Generally, hot rollers take no longer than five minutes to heat up, so be patient.
    • 2
Section your hair into four separate sections while the hot rollers are heating up. First make a line straight down the middle of your scalp, that will give you two sections. Next make another line across the middle of that first line, horizontally.
    • 3
Once the hot rollers are heated completely you may begin inserting them in your hair, but be cautious because the hot rollers are hotter than you might think. For every section of hair that you have previously sectioned off, you will use three large rollers per section or five small rollers per section. Use roller clips to secure each hot rollers in place.
    • 4
Allow twenty minutes time for the hot rollers to cool. While the hot rollers are cooling they are stil curling your hair. In this time, you may choose to eat breakfast, read the paper, do your makeup or simply relax while the hot rollers curl your hair.
    • 5
Remove the hot rollers when they are completely cool to the touch. Once each hot roller is removed, run your fingers through your hair to separate the curls and lastly spray your hair with hairspray to ensure that your curls will keep their bounce throughout the day.
